Pentagon Apartments consists of two four-storey buildings with a total of 40 units, forming the second phase of Hesselbrand’s master plan for Hemavan Ski Resort. The buildings sit closely together in a gentle slope of silver birch trees, framing the view of the expansive landscape. A unique pentagon shaped floor plan creates five bright corner apartments on each storey instead of four. The unusual plan also enables a spatial complexity otherwise impossible to achieve in a typical multi-storey dwelling.

The two structures achieve a high density of units whilst creating an intimate exterior space between the buildings, similar to what is often found in traditional alpine villages. The buildings themselves are composed of a plinth in locally sourced granite, on which three storeys of apartments sit, clad in charred ore-pine. Charring the wood is a traditional facade treatment that unlike painting gives a naturally sustainable weather protection and requires little maintenance.

On the interior, the apartments consist of three rooms with a kitchen and living space in the centre. Services and circulation are concentrated to the inner part of the plan, pushing living spaces and bedrooms towards the façade. The result is an unobstructed interior space with large windows and balconies in the corners, overlooking the untouched surroundings. Meanwhile, the smaller rooms on either end of the plan can be used as additional living spaces or bedrooms thanks to their floor to ceiling sliding doors.

Each unit has been designed with direct connections between all rooms so that when doors are left open, natural light floods the space and you can view every square metre of your home. This means that even if the apartment is small, the plan provides a generous sense of space more similar to that of a large house than a conventional apartment.
