Trollasveien is a double loft extension, designed for two different households in a semi-detached four storey building in Oslo, Norway. The two lofts are able to create a variety of spaces with different qualities simply by dividing the floor plan into four different zones, outlined by a roof terrace and a large dividing wall. The spaces connect to each other diagonally, creating deep sight lines throughout the loft. The ceiling and walls that define the space are simple and white, while the elements that influence and orchestrate different types of use are clad in timber, making the hierarchy of the design visible…

The ceiling and walls that define the space are simple and white, while the elements that influence and orchestrate different types of use are clad in timber, making the hierarchy of the design visible.

The two lofts are nearly identical, but they can be told apart by the different wood veneers used to clad the joinery walls and railings. In one of the lofts walnut panels give the space a darker tone, while the other loft feels brighter and more colourful with its oak panels.

The lofts are accessed through an extension of the existing staircases, which helps to organise all the functions in the plan without the need for separating walls. The central core wall creates diagonal spaces in two directions, which gives the room the impression of always extending beyond the elements that frame it. The roof terrace provides the interior with abundant daylight, as well as a useful exterior space. Along its edges towards the inside, the floor of the terrace creates a ledge, which strengthens the relationship with the interior.
