The A-COLD-WALL* Shanghai flagship store, designed by Hesselbrand, embodies the order, rhythm and timeless spatial qualities of monumental architecture, reflecting the brand’s resolute aesthetic. Through eliminating unnecessary decoration, the space is instead characterised by a rhythmic arrangement of stone columns, concealed mirrors and illuminated screen walls.

The concept for the flagship store is to introduce spatial qualities and principles found in monumental architecture from different epochs, such as factories, temples, and galleries. This approach creates a unique and abstract interpretation of these forms, resulting in a space that feels both expansive and timeless, transcending the industrial aesthetic typically seen in retail.

The material palette, including bush-hammered stone, sandblasted glass, brushed aluminium, and woven steel mesh, juxtaposes qualities of permanence and temporality, the natural and industrial. Stone evokes historical weight, while softly illuminated translucent glass lends a sense of ephemerality, crafting an atmosphere that feels both raw and refined. Each material has its own purpose: stone embodies the space with a sense of historical permanence, while the softly illuminated translucent glass introduces an ephemeral & fluid tectonic. The materials come together to create a clear spatial identity for A-COLD-WALL* that feels simultaneously raw, refined and dynamic.

As more than a retail environment, the Shanghai flagship is designed to serve as a cultural hub within the local fashion community, able to adapt to various functions, from events to exhibitions. Located in the historic Zhangyuan district, the design harmonises with its surroundings by weaving in elements that reflect the area’s architectural heritage. Stone columns and translucent screens echo the weight and permanence of ancient Chinese temples while offering a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional partitions. This fusion of old and new allows the space to feel both rooted in its historical context and forward-looking, creating a distinct cultural landmark within the community.
